Just wanted to inform everyone that we are back from a major server upgrade. During the downtime of the past few days web-access and iPhone ModBox Library Access was not possible, but everything should work now again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

As a long time linux user now working under OS X I find it hard tobelieve there is iTunes only for mp3 playback. Don't take me wrong - iTunes is not bad, but this whole song library database with all it's huge GUI is far too bloated for me compared to the old winamp or x11amp, xmms & audacious.

Luckily there is hope: As OSX easily (more or less) allows the usage of X11 based applications I went into compiling audacious on OSX. As I couldn't find any information about this on the net and it wan't an easy way I am contributing my experiences for everyone else looking fora good mp3 player on OSX.

I have just been informed that our server will be upgraded from 30th October to 1st November 2009. During this period there will be no access to www.rsinsch.de and no access to our high performance modland mirror. This also means that the iPhone ModBox application will not be able to download modfiles from the internet during this weekend.

I just stumbled across this astonishing TinySID Flash Player , which allows you to listen to SID music in your web browser. It is based on the TinySID routines and was ported in a very short time to Adobe Flash based Actionscript using the Achemy framework:

Software emulation of the SID chip has been around for a while, and all modern platforms have a way of playback SID files. Winamp plugins, command line utilities for conversion, it's all there. As is there opensource code to do this. There's libraries for most major languages. So, after a bit of research, I decided upon the Linux version of TinySid. This library is small enough and well optimized. It looked simple to port, so I went at it. All in all, 4 hours later, I had this baby up and running!

After outage of nearly two months our web server has moved to a new domain and we are finally back at http://www.rsinsch.de .

And what has happened in the meantime? Well, my rockbox mod codec has been officially approved and taken into the rockbox svn branch. If you want to listen to good old amiga .mod tunes on your mp3 player grab the latest rockbox here. And if you are in need of mod-music I recommend to check out Modland. There are thousands of modules available for download.

I have finally decided to write a whole new MOD player codec for rockbox. It features

• Soundtracker 15 / 31 Instrument songs
• 4/6/8 Channel Protracker, Soundtracker and Fasttracker songs
• Better effect support, resulting in more compatibility
  
• Better playing/interpolation quality

If you own a rockbox compatible mp3 player (e.g. iPod 1st/2nd gen, Sansa e200 series, iRiver, etc.) you can find the latest patch here.

A lot of people have contacted me lately with feature requests. Some of them with exotic and even compelling tasks. Unfortunately I don't have the time to work on everything so I opened a poll to find out which is the most requested feature. Looks like we have recovered from a major hard disk failure. Everything is back online again, except for the source code of tinysid os x. If you have downloaded it before the outage, please drop an email, so we can restore the lost data. Thanks!
